Elderly Care--Adult Day Community
The Truth In The Spirit
Coming to unity in our communities must begin with the practical aspects of our daily
lives. Elders help us to apply the wisdom of God’s Word to our choices, families,
marriages and overall community involvement. In today’s society, the elderly are often
overlooked and forgotten. This is not only hurtful to someone who has lived a full and
fruitful life, it is also harmful to the community at large, as we miss out on the wisdom
We have a responsibility to the elderly who are not able to care for themselves physically
and/or financially. This responsibility is addressed many times in the New Testament
(Acts 6:1-4 & 1 Timothy 5:3-10). In First Timothy, Paul states that widows should be
The Elderly Care branch of service is focused on just that: caring for the elderly and
allowing the community to benefit from these elders. The Truth In The Spirit works
with other ministries, businesses and organizations to find and secure needed resources
for the elderly. We also serve to guide elderly citizens to congregations that will care
for their spiritual and physical needs. When we open The Truth Center in Newport
News, Virginia in 2011, we will provide a place for elders to receive the assistance they
from their experiences. Caring for the
elderly is not just an issue in the secular
world; believers and congregations also
struggle with how to respectfully and
appropriately minister to the needs of elderly
family members and congregants. To
address this growing concern, Adonai has
charged The Truth In The Spirit with
empowering aging citizens to continue to
serve their communities.
cared for by their relatives so as not to burden others (vs. 8
& 16). However, the cost of caring for the elderly these
days can exceed that of providing for a family of four.
Needless to say, not everyone can afford to care for their
elderly relatives. The Body of Believers is also often
incapable of caring for the elderly who have little or no
family, and there are very few effective resources available
to the elderly through community agencies. This leaves the
elderly without the provisions they need and deserve.
need and continue to be active members of
their communities. Through the support of
The Ecclesia Network of Ministries and
The Nehemiah Network, we will
provide this service at a lower cost than
other elderly care communities with the
expectation that all elders served stay active
in the community through fellowships
on-site, being a role model for the youth in
our training programs, and sharing their
experiences and wisdom to build up the
community.
The elderly have much to offer the community. We can enrich and even prolong the
lives of our elders by showing them that God still has a purpose for them and their
existence can still positively affect the lives of others around them. The elderly are a
seldom resourced treasure and a weapon in our arsenal to reclaim our families,
congregations and communities.

The Truth Center Adult Day Community
Program Description
The Truth In The Spirit is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation focused on community development. Through The Truth
Center Adult Day Community, we will care for and resource the elderly in our community. We all can benefit from
the wisdom and experience of the elders if we care enough to interact with them and humble ourselves enough to listen
to them. Through adult day care, outreach activities, resources and referrals, The Truth Center Adult Day Community
will provide a special place where the elderly can receive quality, personal daycare from professional staff, obtain
community resources and be a resource to the community. Through the care and services we will provide, we will
help the elders in our community to thrive, while giving them a voice and willing listeners. Feeling that they have a
purpose in life can help maintain dignity and prolong the life of an elderly person. An elder who is connected to the
community can incite positive changes that could not come from any other segment of the local population.
Operation
We plan to open The Truth Center Adult Day Community on December 5th, 2011. The Center will be open from
6:30am to 6:30pm Mondays through Fridays. We are planning to schedule special events for Saturdays and Sundays
occasionally. Participants and their families will be able to attend the special weekend events together or participant
family members may drop off participants at these events and pick them up afterwards.
Population
At The Truth Center Adult Day Community, we will serve ambulatory adults ages 55 and up, regardless of race,
ethnicity, gender or religious affiliation. We will also serve adults ages 18 and up who are physically handicapped,
including those using wheelchairs, walkers or canes for assistance. Our service population will also include adults 18
and up who are experiencing slight memory loss or the beginning stages of Alzheimer’s. Adults who need assistance
with activities of daily living (ADLs) will also be included in our service population. We will accept private pay and
Medicare.
Program Components and Goals
The programs of The Truth Center Adult Day Community will focus on the following areas: physical health and
healing, spiritual and emotional integration, community involvement and youth interaction. Our professional and caring
staff (to include an RN, LPN and CNAs) will ensure that each participant is properly assessed—physically, emotionally
and mentally—and appropriate individualized care plans are created to maintain and increase health and independence in
all areas of life. Additionally, we will provide opportunities for participants to choose to receive either Bible-based
inspiration or non-religious inspiration each day. We will also offer group discussions on various topics that affect the
emotional and mental health of the participants, such as families, relationships, finances, etc.
As we are a community development organization, connecting the elderly to the community will be an important
component of our adult day community. We will make these connections through offering community resources and
referrals to the elderly, as well as informing them of issues of concern in the community and seeking their opinions and
wisdom. Each week, the participants of The Truth Center Adult Day Community will have the opportunity to learn
about an issue of community concern, ways in which various community members are getting involved in those
issues, and opportunities to voice their opinions. As the participants share their opinions, they will choose whether or
not to have their views recorded (in a written or video format) and then shared with other community members and
organizations. Additionally, we will take field trips to various places in our community that will educate the participants
about community issues and give them an opportunity to make connections with key people and places in our
community.
Another important element in helping the elderly make community connections is connecting them with youth in our
community in a sort of “adopt-a-grandparent” program called “Kid Connection”. Youth from our community will
come to The Center at least twice a month to connect with the participants. Each participant will have the opportunity
to choose to be paired with one youth for meaningful interactions at The Center. Through our community involvement
and youth interaction components, the participants will have many opportunities to make a difference in the lives of
others around them and the community at large. Our community involvement and youth interaction programs are
inspired by the following Bible quotation: “God, you have taught me since I was young, and I still proclaim your
wonderful works. So now that I’m old, and my hair is gray, don’t abandon me, God, till I have proclaimed your
strength to the next generation, your power to all who will come.”—Psalm 71:17-18.
Services Provided
The Truth Center Adult Day Community will provide a myriad of services to help us reach our goals for the programs
and individual goals for each participant. To meet our physical health goals, we will provide professional nursing care,
low-impact exercise and activities options and healthy meals and snacks throughout the day. As we coordinate with
the participants’ doctors, family members and personal representatives, we will create and implement physical health
goals to be included and measured in their individualized care plans and help them connect to services needed. Our
nursing staff will acquire and administer medications to participants and assist in scheduling medical appointments.
Transportation, through contracted services, will be available for participants to travel to and from appointments and
on regular field trips as well. Our facility provides a safe and homelike environment, so that we will be able to offer
many opportunities for time outside during warm weather, and we will conduct field trips each month that will give the
participants opportunities to move around and visit new locations. We will have regular concerts by local musicians
and visits from therapy pets to offer mental stimulation and interaction. Additionally, mentally stimulating activities,
such as games and puzzles, will be offered daily.
To meet our emotional and spiritual integration goals, we will provide spiritual guidance by licensed ministers,
emotional stimulation by nurses and activities personnel as well as fun and interactive activities throughout the day,
balanced by opportunities for reflection and quiet times. Our staff will also provide craft activities, musical stimulation
(with live and recorded music) and opportunities to become and feel apart of the family atmosphere of The Truth
Center Adult Day Community. Through various daily activities, participants will have the opportunities to get to know
one another, explore various cultures and aspects of life, and influence the programs and environment of The Center
itself. Participants will also have the opportunity to build their own skills through optional entrepreneurship trainings
and creative writing classes, both of which can actually lead to new ventures for the participants, as they will have
opportunities to start small businesses (like selling crocheted items) and publishing their writings (as in a book of
poems or short stories). These opportunities can help participants to feel valued, encouraging them and adding value
to their lives. Our community involvement and youth interaction programs will also assist us in meeting our emotional
and spiritual integration goals. The community involvement programs include optional training in new technologies to
connect with the community, as well.
